Queerrealism – New Realms of Surrealism, 2024

Celebrating the 100th anniversary of the Surrealist Manifesto, the group exhibition Queerreality – New Realms of Surrealism, presented at Galerie Kulturbunker Köln-Mülheim and curated by Aylime Aslı Demir (Ankara Queer Art Program) and Eva Liedtjens (NEOLA art projects e.V.), brings together ten artists from Germany and Turkey to explore the connections and differences between Surrealism and queerfeminist art. From pop-surrealist to hybrid in-between worlds, from alternative realities to dreams and the night, the artists create a dialogue that spans time and communities, challenges the heteronormative order and questions identities. On display are innovative works by queer, feminist and (post-)migrant artists who are inspired by classical surrealism and boldly criticise and reinterpret its principles. For this exhibition, Berk Kır presented photographic works that developed hybrid narratives by superimposing his handwritten notes onto images of bodies submerged in water, intertwining memory, language, and the body through layered photographic surfaces.
